New, Higher Annual Fee

The American Express® Gold Card used to charge a $250 annual fee. With this new update, the annual fee will increase to $325. This $75 increase may be painful for some cardholders. However, the card is gaining two additional credits to help offset the rise in its fee.

New and Existing Credits

The American Express Gold Card already offers cardholders a few credits, helping offset the annual fee cost:

  • $120 Uber credit. Cardholders get up to $10 per month in Uber Cash, which they can use to book rideshare rides or pay for delivery through UberEats.
  • $120 dining credit. Cardholders get up to $10 per month in statement credits that they can use for select dining purchases.

With the new update, cardholders will also receive:

  • $100 Resy credit. Cardholders will get up to $50 in statement credits semiannually to use toward Resy, an online restaurant reservation service.
  • $84 Dunkin’ credit. Cardholders will get up to $7 in monthly statement credits for purchases at Dunkin’ locations.

Enrollment is required for select benefits.

The $120 dining credit is also receiving an update, adding Five Guys to the list of eligible restaurants and removing Shake Shack and Milk Bar. This means the eligible vendors include:

  • Five Guys
  • Grubhub
  • The Cheesecake Factory
  • Goldbelly
  • Wine.com

Rewards Updates

The Gold Card’s rewards categories will not change with its new update. However, there will be a new cap on global restaurant spending. Cardholders will receive 4 Membership Rewards points per dollar spent only on the first $50,000 they spend at restaurants each year.

That leaves the card’s rewards categories as:

  • 4 points per dollar on global restaurant purchases up to $50,000 per year (beginning January 1, 2025)
  • 4 points per dollar on U.S. supermarkets, up to $25,000 per year
  • 3 points per dollar on flights booked directly with airlines or through American Express Travel
  • 1 point per dollar on other eligible purchases

Limited-Time New Card Offer

To celebrate the changes to the Gold Card, American Express is offering new cardholders a limited-time offer.

If you are approved, you can request a new White Gold version of the card. The card also comes with a welcome offer of 60,000 Membership Rewards points after spending $6,000 on purchases in the first 6 months of card membership. Plus, earn 20% back in statement credits on restaurant purchases worldwide up to $100 back until November 6, 2024.

Is the Amex Gold Still Worth It?

The key changes to the Gold Card are its $75 higher annual fee and the addition of $184 in new statement credits. The cap on global restaurant spending will only affect people who spend large amounts at restaurants.

If you use Resy or eat at Dunkin’ regularly, the new credits will more than offset the increase in the annual fee. If you live in the midwest or western U.S., where Dunkin locations are far less common, and don’t use Resy, you won’t see any tangible benefits for the higher fee.

If the card seems like a good fit for you, the limited-time welcome bonus is a good value, consider applying in time to get the new White Gold card and take advantage of the $100 restaurant statement credit offer.
